Through my Mother I am a Nix. Eli Lester Nix (1884-1927) my Grandfather who died when my mother was 6 year old. His father was George Washington Nix (yes, I know there is a bunch of them) (3/12/1858-2/9/1932) born in Berrien or Lanier County, GA. His father was William Varnell Nix (12/25/1835-5/1/1911), we do not know where he was born.
He entered the Confederate Army on May 6,862 in Milltown (Now Lakeland), GA, at that time it was Berrien County, now it is Lanier County.
He was in Company E 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment CSA. I was present on October 10, 1998 when the Berrien Georgia State Line Troops of Thomasville, GA and the Wiregrall Greys #1683 of Adel, GA conducted a Dedication of Confederate Marker and Iron Cross ceremony at his gravesite, Empire Church Cemetary, Lanier County, GA.
The family story that my mother remembers is that he had 3 brothers who were also in the Confederate Army, they were separated during the war and 1 went to Alabama, 1 to Texas and two stayed in Georgia. If any of you have this family story I would love to hear from you.
This is where my research ends. I do not have names for W.V. Nix parents or a place of birth although in the 1870 and 1900 Census' he is listed as born in GA and in the 1900 Census he listed his father and mother as being born in GA. I know that he was married in Pulaski County, GA in 1855 to Margaret Ann (Peggy) Mullis and they had at least two children Mary Faitha Nix and George Washington Nix.
If anyone needs this line I will be glad to share what I have. Since my mother knew most of these relatives and started our family history (I only inherited it when she was no longer able) and I knew many of them the information I have is pretty accurate and some of it came from their gravesites. I would appreciate any link that will give me a clue as to where to go next. I have tried every free site I can find, I am retired and helping to take care of my mother so sites that charge for information are of no use to me.
Thanks, Sue
